Derek is a commercial barrister whose main areas of practice are companies, securities, takeovers, commercial and competition law.

He joined the independent bar in 2011 after a career of more than 25 years as a corporate partner with Russell McVeagh.  During that time Derek advised many major New Zealand and international companies and was involved in a number of the most significant commercial transactions undertaken in New Zealand.  Derek has significant experience in the energy, financial services, telecommunications and information technology sectors.

Derek is currently the Chairman of the New Zealand Markets Disciplinary Tribunal, having been a member of the Tribunal since its establishment in 2004.

In addition to providing advice and solutions on complex and strategically important commercial issues, Derek has extensive experience in drafting commercial contracts and transaction documents and is available to act as an arbitrator.
